A predestined location. By Head of BioTOP Dr. Kai Bindseil
Biotechnology is still a very young segment of high tech industry. Ever since the mid nineties, when at last there were clear and effective measures in Germany towards developing the biotech sector, Adlershof has ranked among the locations predestined for the emerging enterprises. Besides the general advantages of a technology park boasting a superior infrastructure, Adlershof also provides excellent potential for interdisciplinary collaboration. For instance, automation and high throughputmethods adopt a key role in modern genome research and drug development; diagnostics and bioanalytics benefit from optical technologies; and nanotechnology makes use of physical, chemical and biological mechanisms. For all these and many other fields, Adlershof is home to a wide range of expertise.
As a technology park, Adlershof is by definition a place of innovation: A technology park can prevail and thrive only when it continues to attract young startups whose objectives are to develop the nicheproducts of tomorrow and the mass products thereafter. And that is exactly what the biotech enterprises in Adlershof are doing. Today they are working as specialised service providers for major partners in the pharmaceuticals, chemicals and food industries. And they are working on products that will become important to billions of people in the future: catering to the fundamental needs ofus all – nutrition, health, energy, andenvironmental protection.
The Life Science location in Berlin- Brandenburg has made itself felt on both the national and international levels and has adopted a top position in Germany. Today the region around the capital is home to 194biotech, about 350 medical engineering and 23 pharmaceuticals enterprises – and Adlershof has contributed its share to this success.
