Customized solutions addressing skilled labor shortage

Ferdinand-Braun-Institut and the Aus- und Weiterbildungsnetzwerk Hochtechnologie (Advanced Training Network for High Technology) are committed to promoting young talent

The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, in collaboration with the Aus- und Weiterbildungsnetzwerk Hochtechnologie (Advanced Training Network for High Technology) (ANH Berlin), is committed to securing the next generation of talent in the high-tech sector. This fall, the institute will once again offer three apprenticeships for microtechnologists, alongside a variety of initiatives for all qualification levels. ANH Berlin also arranges apprenticeships in other technical and scientific fields.

Attracting smart minds for research and development in high technology is one of the industry’s central challenges. Many career paths are still not well known and are perceived as “too boring” or “too demanding”. Therefore, the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH), and ANH Berlin, based at the institute, are focusing on customized solutions. The FBH actively participates in academic teaching and supervises theses and doctoral dissertations. Additionally, they aim to inspire young people to pursue dual training in technical and commercial fields.

From Career Orientation to Career Change

The seventh annual Ausbildungs-Allianz-Adlershof (Training Alliance Adlershof) (AAA), organized by ANH Berlin, is just one example of the effectiveness of targeted initiatives, even during times of acute skilled labor shortages. In early June, 25 companies and research institutions, along with over 200 students from the 9th grade onwards, participated in the event. After a career orientation fair, the students explored the companies, gained insights into real work environments such as cleanrooms and laboratories, and learned about potential career paths. The authentic experience excited the students, while the companies appreciated direct contact with potential apprentices. Teachers also emphasized the event’s value in helping their students make informed career choices.

“Motivated, qualified, and well-integrated employees are the backbone of any company. This is especially true for the knowledge- and research-intensive activities we offer at FBH”, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Patrick Scheele, scientific director of the FBH. “In such a specific sector as ours, standard solutions do not suffice. We want to meet people where they are—on equal footing and with the right offerings.”

One such offering is the “Electronics Manufacturing Specialist” qualification, which ANH Berlin has developed in cooperation with partners specifically for career changers. This low-threshold program lasts five months and is aimed at people looking to change careers or those seeking employment. Graduates of the program, for example, produce and test microelectronic and micro-optical assemblies. Since 2023, 56 participants have successfully completed the program or are currently in training.

FBH will continue to intensify its efforts to secure skilled workers and provide attractive career prospects for young talent. In September, the institute will once again offer apprenticeships in microtechnology. ANH Berlin arranges numerous other apprenticeships in the high-tech sector.
