Integrating refugees in Berlin
II. International Evening of the Technology Park Adlershof / 120 participants
About 120 participants got together for the II. International Evening of the Technology Park Adlershof on 20th January 2016 - more than twice as many as for the first meeting in December 2015. Among them were 50 refugees from the refugee shelters on Groß-Berliner Damm, Rudower Straße, Radickestraße, and in the Rahnsdorf district of Berlin. They met with entrepreneurs, representatives from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), the employment agency, various aid organizations, and volunteers. Among the refugees were chemists, computer scientists, teachers, engineers, project managers, accountants, hotel and restaurant staff, and even a policeman.
The HU’s student counselling service as well as scientists and students were able to help the refugees with university-related questions. The South Berlin employment agency answered questions on refugee employment. The association of the large photonics and optics cluster in Berlin and Brandenburg OpTecBB explained how its member companies plan to open up positions for refugees. The Helmholtz Association as well as companies including AEMtec GmbH have already successfully integrated a number of refugees.
Besides the employment agency, there are other initiatives such as “ARRIVO Berlin“ that support integration. Many companies from the Science and Technology Park Adlershof have planned to open up jobs for refugees in the course of 2016. WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH, for example, will take on two additional trainees this year.
In order to aid the integration of refugees in the job and education market, is it also planned to publish anonymized profiles of job applicants on the site’s website. Companies and institutions in Adlershof offering jobs are encouraged to publish these in German and English. (<link en/refugees/jobs/>www.adlershof.de/en/refugees/jobs/</link>)
Following the International Evening, many good matches between companies and applicants were found through the cooperation with the employment agency. The company EUROSOC#DIGITAL is currently fine-tuning an app which it presented that evening. It promises to facilitate and accelerate the job application process using a semantic matching technology.
The II. International Evening took place in Hans-Grade-Saal at Forum Adlershof. Due to the room’s limited capacity, the III. International Evening will take place in the Bunsen-Saal of WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH, Volmerstraße 2, 12489 Berlin, on 17th February 2016. This room provides ample space for companies and scientific institutions to present themselves individually.
The organizers kindly ask all interested companies and institutions to get in contact with Kezban Saritas (saritas(at)wista.de).
