Professor Dr. Panne is the new president of BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing
The chemist succeeds Professor Dr. Manfred Hennecke
Upon his appointment to BAM President Professor Panne emphasised that he looks forward to expanding the integration of Engineering and Natural Sciences at BAM. It is the only way to adequately address challenging topics of chemistry, materials science and materials engineering in a multidisciplinary context. The 49-year-old analytical chemist has been with BAM since 2004 and headed Department 1, Analytical Chemistry, Reference Materials. He is also Professor of Instrumental Analytical Chemistry at Humboldt University Berlin. Professor Panne is co-founder and, since 2012, a spokesman for the Graduate School of Analytical Sciences Adlershof (SALSA) within the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments.
Professor Panne studied chemistry at the University of Dortmund and University College London, earned his PhD from the Technical University of Munich, where he habilitated in 2001 after a postdoctoral stay at the JRC Ispra. After declining a call to the University of Leipzig, the chemist switched to BAM and the Humboldt University Berlin in 2004. The focus of his research is instrumental analysis, particularly the development of new spectroscopic methods.
For his outstanding service in that field, Professor Panne received the Fresenius Award from the German Chemical Society (GDCh) in 2009.
