Restructuring in HZB management
Prof. Bernd Rech assumes the role of sole Scientific Director of Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin
In a special meeting of the HZB Supervisory Board on 8 February 2022, Prof. Jan Lüning retreated from his position of Scientific Director of HZB. Lüning asked in December to be dismissed and the Supervisory Board has now acquiesced to his request.
Prof. Bernd Rech will now, with immediate effect, assume the role of sole Scientific Director of HZB, as the Supervisory Board has also decided. In addition to his existing responsibility for the research areas Energy and Information, Rech will now also be responsible for the research area Matter.
Jan Lüning continues to work at HZB and, as a representative of management, will continue to drive the BER II dismantling project onward. The Director for Finance and Administration Thomas Frederking will be responsible for this. Furthermore, Lüning will dedicate himself as Chief Scientist for Short-Pulse Spectroscopy.
Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Volkmar Dietz (BMBF) is confident that HZB will continue successfully on its current trajectory with Prof. Rech at the helm. “I would like to thank Prof. Lüning very much for his work as Scientific Director of HZB and for his commitment to photon science in Germany over the past three years. I am very sorry to see him step down, but of course respect his choice. HZB is pursuing a clear strategy as a technology-oriented centre with a focus on materials research, which the Supervisory Board expressly welcomes. Prof. Rech has been a significant driver in this respect, and I am convinced that he will continue guiding HZB towards its successful development in the future.”
