Adlershof has the right mix
Editorial by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, State Secretary in the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment
The science, business and media hub in the south-east of Berlin is booming and gradually becoming a lively and vibrant district. There is an increasing number of occasions to get an idea of the progress of various projects here. In the past few months, it has seen the laying of foundation stones, topping-out ceremonies and official openings, including in the new “Wohnen am Campus” quarter, but also on Rudower Chaussee, which is increasingly living up to its function as the main artery of the business, science and media hub. For example, the Berlin Brandenburg State Laboratory is moving to the corner of Rudower Chaussee and Wegedornstraße, effectively strengthening the analytics cluster in the area. Numerous projects in various stages of development document the successful Berlin mix of research, residential, commercial and media space that is being brought to life in this area.
For over two decades now, the State of Berlin has been committed to developing the Adlershof science and business hub to make it a successful urban district. Its targeted investments in institutes of higher education, transport links and infrastructure, as well as the stabilisation of the existing science and technology cluster, have made a significant contribution to the long-term development of the area. While state funds were used in the early stages to drive forward the development of Adlershof, we are now proud to be able to say that it is now primarily private investors that shape the area with their construction projects. This has resulted in the creation of over 16,000 jobs. Soon, there will be more than 3,000 homes in Adlershof.
The pace of construction and development can be seen on every street corner. For the plot by the S-Bahn station, which was previously dominated by the words “Adlershof. Science at Work.”, a competition resulted in the decision to implement an ambitious project, including a campus hotel. In order to maintain a sense of balance, additional commercial space will be created alongside the new homes, to be used by manufacturing companies.
Together with Adlershof Projekt GmbH as the developer and trustee managers from the State of Berlin, we, the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment, are working with zeal towards driving forward the typical Berlin mix here in Adlershof.
