Analytic City
“Analytic City Adlershof” gives a qualified insight into the equipment and resources pool of the Science City
“The database of expertise embodied by Analytic City Adlershof is a great help to us”, said Jens Hanke, Managing Director of Graforce Hydro GmbH. His company is presently developing an innovative technology for the low cost generation of hydrogen and sees in this a key contribution to the energy transition. He confided his objective: “We intend to cross the magic limit of three euros for one kilogram of hydrogen.” To this end, the company has developed highly efficient hydrogen generators based on plasma physics processes. Even though water is seen by many to be a simple matter, it is everything but simple to identify and assess the processes on the molecular level.
Hanke admitted that a new company cannot afford a lot of analytical methods and equipment important to an R&D process. “Besides our core expertise, we need partners that can provide the resources, experience, and equipment for the analytics.” Hanke continued that these cannot be found in the Yellow Pages, yet the brochure “Analytic City Adlershof” and its list of local companies and institutes sorted according to analytical methods, sectors, and services had “led to results in no time at all”. For instance, contacts were made with the chemistry department of Humboldt-Universität; the companies art photonics and greateyes; and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing BAM. Supported by these cooperation projects, he found that his questions concerning the processes in water could best be answered with Raman spectroscopy. Consequently, Graforce Hydro had its samples analysed in a Raman spectroscope at the BAM.
“In the meantime, the expertise database Analytic City Adlershof has been prepared for online access on the internet,” explained Beate Mekiffer, Director of Strategic Projects at WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH. This provides an area for general access and an additional area containing more specific details. Although this requires registration, it is free of charge. She added that the find functions deliver fast results.
Beate Mekiffer explained that the idea for the expertise database has been pursued since 2011. She continued that although Adlershof was or still is home to many fields of expertise and resources, so to speak in the neighbourhood, there had been a growing number of requests for the needed mediations. The conclusion: the availability of a network does not lead automatically to more communication, so the Technology Park operator assumed the role of the communicator in the field of analytics and elevated this to a new quality level. She revealed that the companies and institutes were now expressing great interest in the expertise database.
